Rev. Dr. Deacon Spyridon Xydas was born in San Francisco, CA to Stylianos (Chios, Greece) and Katherine (Denver, CO) and moved to Michigan in 2005. Deacon Spiros has taught instrumental music for 24 years at the elementary, middle school, high school, and university level and currently teaches band in Troy where his wife also teaches orchestra. He has degrees in Music and Music Education from the University of California Santa Barbara, Sonoma State University, California State University Hayward, and Northwestern University. His PhD in Music Education was from Oakland University in 2014. Deacon Spiros has presented his research at conferences and workshops in Michigan, California, New Jersey, Greece, Scotland, and Iceland and recently served six years as the state chair of Music Education for the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. Deacon Spiros completed the Diaconate Program at Holy Cross in 2021 and was ordained to the Holy Diaconate by Metropolitan Nicholas on December 11th, 2022 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Troy, Michigan where he faithfully serves the parish.
Along with his wife Diakonissa Laura (Eleni), they are raising four young daughters Sophia (Katerina), Maria, Styliani, and Evangeline. Their family enjoys the outdoors, swimming in their lake, and tending to their flock of chickens. |
