Fr. John Moutafis was born in Crete in 1945 to the late Mr. Marines and Athena Moutafis. As a young child Fr. John grew up just a few yards from the St. Panteleimon parish in Mania. As a young boy Fr. John served as an altar boy to the late Fr. Antonios Vrouvakis. In his teenage years he attended the Ecclesiastical school of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Hania. It was during this time that Fr. John learned Byzantine chant and liturgies. At the age of fifteen Father was the left chanter in his neighborhood parish.
At the age of twenty three Fr. John left his chanting position and came to the United States. Upon arriving in Detroit Father assumed the chanting positions of the Sts. Constantine and Helen and St John's churches. Fr. John was married in 1968 to Cassiani Lagoudakis also from Hania Crete. Father and Presbytera have two daughters, Athena and loanna. They are also blessed with two granddaughters, Nektaria and Glykeria.
Fr. John was ordained to the Holy diaconate on December 12th 1984 in the Diocesan chapel by the hand of Bishop Timotheos of blessed memory. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood at the St. John Church (then located in Warren, MI) on January 12th, 1985. Fr. John has served in many of the parishes of our Metropolis including Marquette, Flint, Saginaw, Ft Wayne, Indianapolis, Middle Town, Dayton, and Springfield. Cincinnati, Buffalo, Rochester, Louisville, Bloomfield Hills, Sterling Heights, Troy, Detroit, Farmington Hills, Westland, Southgate, St. Clair Shores, Plymouth, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Nashville, Chattanooga, Lansing, as well as the St. Panteleimon chapel in Lexington, MI.
Fr. John is always available to serve whenever and where ever he might be needed. He enjoys reading, chanting, serving the Metropolis of Detroit.
